ABSTRACT

Models are images of reality in a way that facts of reality are interpreted, through the language, into a structure of words which must have something in common with the structure of the facts. The explanation value of many models is questioned also in the West, in particular as simple and lawful relations in economic, technical and social systems – where individuals interact with technology – which can easily lead to complex, hazardous and even completely unpredictable situations. The fact that most processes of dynamic, economic, technical, social and biological systems are non-linear creates a need for partly new thinking in models. This need for new thinking also applies, of course, to developing countries, where low utilization of computers and uncertainty about their contribution to the development process should lead to discussions about alternative models rather than to new techniques.
