ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the nature of the right to development (RTD). With a special attention to the right at a global level, it focuses on the implementation of the right and also examines the content of the RTD. The chapter also focuses on the controversy on the right in academic arenas and at the United Nations level. It also examines the substance of the RTD and provides a brief overview of the right as described by the United Nations Declaration on the Right to Development (UNDRTD). The chapter shows that the RTD is a subject of disagreement in academic arenas as well as at the UN level. At the UN level, the disagreement on the RTD is characterised by the politicisation of the debate, the reflection of such politicisation in voting resolutions on the right and different approaches vis a vis the right by international organisations. The lack of agreement on the RTD reaches international organisations at the UN level.
