ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the description of spatial distribution patterns in employment density, employment function, innovation intensity and employment growths. It presents exploratory spatial data analysis using global and local indicators of spatial association are applied to the South-Holland data on the firm and employment structure and distribution over the zip codes. The chapter also focuses on spatial data analyses of the growth of number of firms and employment in the South-Holland research area. It also presents spatial autocorrelated patterns of new and dissolute firms in South-Holland. It describes similar spatial data analyses on the national (municipal) scale, focusing on employment and structures and growth respectively. Employment and firm density measurement is at the heart of exploratory spatial data analysis concerning economic development. On the national scale, patterns of spatial autocorrelation are more profound, both for employment density and functions, as well as for employment growth.
