ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book discusses how the preceding contributions contributed to furthering our understanding of human suffering, with the ultimate goal being to reduce and prevent future anguish. It highlights some of the questions that remain unanswered, in the hope that those in the growing community of human rights scholars will address them in their efforts to further the quest for human dignity. The book also highlights the need to subject the human rights records of international actors, both governmental and non-governmental, to systematic empirical scrutiny. It focuses on how different protest activities influence a government’s decision to use repression against its own people. The book describes the effect of arms transfers on the human rights records in the recipient countries and examines multiple channels by which trade influences both security and subsistence rights.
