ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses how Beijing's stock of office buildings is being environmentally managed, by looking at programmes and strategies advanced by local utilities and environmental policy agencies, as well as by global companies occupying office spaces. Since 1949, Beijing attempted to gain a new image, whereby urban planning and architectural styles were directly influenced by early Soviet models. The Beijing Central Business District (CBD), the most developed area of Beijing, is a 4Km section of Chaoyang district with its core at the intersection of Jianguomenwai Avenue and the Third Ring Road. Most of the administrative, financial and business buildings were scattered in areas outside the Second Ring Road, which delimits the old city. The distribution of rainfall in Beijing is inconsistent, owing to its topography and monsoon.
