ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the ability in the United Kingdom and Ireland. It looks at the United Kingdom, which encompasses England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, examining such legislation as the Disability Discrimination Act, Disability Rights Commission Act, Human Rights Act and Equal Pay Act, as well as for minorities with a disability the Racial Relations Act and for women with a disability the Sexual Discrimination Act. The Code of Practice on Equal Pay is the main source of advice on implementing equal pay in the workplace and was issued by the Equal Opportunities Commission in 1997. The chapter looks at disability discrimination in the Republic of Ireland, the two main pieces of legislation are the Employment Equality Act and Equal Status Act. The principle is that redressing this inequality is a shared responsibility by all aspects of government stakeholders in disability analysis, planning and training. The State's accountability for violations committed by private actors has long been an important debate.
