ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the schools and Sixth Form Colleges in the study. It provides an overview of the young people and their families. The policy for Roman Catholic secondary schools across Wales is that they act as 'feeder schools' for centrally located and voluntarily aided Catholic Tertiary Colleges. In most instances any higher education guidance is provided as part of the Personal and Social Education curriculum. The specificity of locality in relation to issues of choice has been stressed in relation to the research on school choice and markets. Middle class parents recognize that the positioning of an institution in the market place is still supported by the A-level points score demanded at entry. The value of networks, a key aspect of social capital, in maintaining and advancing class based advantages in the education market has been widely considered.
