ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that if Peace Research is rejectionist, innovative and instrumental, then its disappearance as a discrete and identifiable entity could be seen as a mark of its own success. If the research cancer specialist needs a hospital to see his or her work implemented, then the analogy with Peace Research and International Non-governmental Organizations (INGOs) is one that is analogous and worthy of serious examination, not least in pursuit of synergies and increased effects. International Relations started as International Politics and some university departments and institutes adhere to the traditional rubric. But International Relations was meant to signify something wider and more encompassing, perhaps issues of economic security and increased numbers of international relationships that did not all involve states. International Political Economy emerged to encompass the politics of trade, industry and money. Both international politics and international economics allocate, but they allocate according to different logics.
