ABSTRACT

A frequently heard criticism of policies to promote export crop production in the Third World is that export-oriented agricultural development is less environmentally sustainable than food production for domestic consumption. There is also concern that cash crops are increasingly grown on the more fertile lands and are pushing food production, especially subsistence cultivation, on to marginal areas.
