ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the approaches for improving the collection of migration data by Health and Demographic Surveillance Systems sites (HDSS)-centred research initiatives. However, despite the diversity of contexts represented in the data and some variation in the threshold of time used to classify migration, there is a relatively regular age structure to migration in these INDEPTH sites. In order to improve their ability to study migration and to reap the full collective potential of HDSS, some improvements are needed in the collection of migration data by INDEPTH member sites. HDSS are similar to videos that continuously record entries and exits from the demographic surveillance area. In order to fully exploit this foundation, routine HDSS data must be complemented by specialized surveys that capture aspects that are difficult to explore during regular household visits. The chapter also presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book.
