ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the community context of the sites, highlighting the ways that their opportunity spaces differ and how this is likely to shape the migration patterns and migration-health interactions at each site. Community operates through layers of influence and the influences on family livelihoods, health and migration are simultaneous, interactive and often linked. Migration networks linking the community with other communities, in or out of the nation, also exert a powerful influence on subsequent migration choices. Migration also may be used to access education or social network resources, which can be used by the family to diversify or strengthen their livelihoods. Migration, livelihoods and health have been of interest at several INDEPTH sites. The chapter describes integrated model of sustainable livelihoods, health and migration to these sites. In the seven INDEPTH sites migration rates are higher in the semi-arid and moderate tropical zones. Agincourt and Manhica have high susceptibility to drought and hence to drought-related migrations.
