ABSTRACT

This chapter describes Swiss data series as long as possible are used to identify long-term trends in freight transport, by rail and by road, as well as structural breaks. The statistics on freight transport were modified in 1985 and again in 1997, so that several sets of time series are available with partial overlap. Freight lifted by rail has grown roughly on a linear trend over the full 130 years of data, if the new statistics are allowed to replace the old ones. The surveys of road transport of 1993 and 1998 provide detailed data on the nature of freight transport - inland freight, imports, exports and transit, by Swiss and foreign goods vehicle. Companies and Workforce Rail transport services are supplied by numerous companies in Switzerland. In addition to trains and goods vehicles, pipelines, ships and barges, planes and other special modes also move freight. Growth rates were estimated by adjusting exponential trends to annual data.
