ABSTRACT

This chapter explores more stories of working people, witnesses and victims of terrorism in a major city. It presents the stories of three managers and business leaders. Allen, a partner in a prestigious law-firm housed in a tall and prominent building; Sean, the security manager at a major events venue; and Louis, the general manager of a Melbourne-based public transport organization. Each story is framed by their responsibility to secure the safety of organizations, workers, spaces and people. Allen most dreaded terrorism when he could picture the point of impact of aircraft crashing into New York's Twin Towers. Sean argued that while people in some cities around the world have been more accustomed to terrorism, Australians have not been. Louis primarily thought about the two London attacks and the Madrid attack when considering the possibility of terrorism affecting Melbourne. In protecting his organization from terrorism, Louis adopted methods for simulating security by creating an image of safety.
