ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes the Spanish farmers' unions. It provides a brief introduction to the history of the farm interest group system in Spain and examines the most significant features that characterize it today. The chapter analyzes the three associations that represent the general interests of Spanish farmers, the Agricultural Association-Young Farmers, the Coordinating Committee for Organizations of Spanish Farmers and Livestock Producers and Small Farmers' Union. It examines the current context of change occurring in Spanish agriculture that serves as a framework of reference for farmers. The chapter analyzes the effects that this process of change is having on farmers' unions in Spain and examines the wide range of discourses and the diversity of their strategies and organizational models. It analyzes the role that these organizations play in the decision-making processes when defining and implementing agricultural and rural policy at the European Union, national, regional and local levels.
