ABSTRACT

Lord Burghersh was forty-six years of age, Lady Burghersh thirty-seven, when they and their five children returned to England in 1830 to face an uncertain future. The Tories were out of political power, and there was no opportunity for Lord Burghersh to secure another diplomatic post until there was a change in government. If there had been any question before as to the authorship of the performance review, the review of the score left no doubt that the writer of both articles was indeed William Ayrton. Of necessity, he proceeded to focus his full attention on the RAM, and any production of his music, for the stage or otherwise, would have been an event that did not depend solely upon professional musicians to bring it to fruition. In 1841 the long hoped for change in the British government finally occurred, and the Tories returned to power.
