ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses the main methodological and substantive findings from the research and discusses the implications of operationalizing social exclusion for research and policy. It deals with a succinct account of the key empirical findings. The chapter discusses the context in which these findings should be regarded, concentrating in particular on methodological considerations and the limitations of survey data. In addressing this research objective an extensive assessment of the academic and political social exclusion literature was undertaken. To ensure that a discussion of the implications of this research is located in context of the main research findings, the chapter presents a concise summary of the key theoretical and empirical analysis. Constructing a conceptually valid definition of social exclusion has implications for policy, especially relevant at a time when social exclusion is being readily incorporated into the philosophy and strategy of governments and policy makers.
