ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with a particularly good example from the promotional literature of an image adapting and making use of existing images of a place. In relation to existing images of Ireland, in early literature and tradition, certain images were associated with particular regions. The photograph as proof of the event comes into play using some simple iconic codes. The semes included in this composition include: a smiling man posing for the camera with a fish held in his hands in a gesture of display; a net full of similar fish; plastic containers and various pieces of half unseen equipment; and, a body of water surrounded by green vegetation. In crafts, however, work was idealized, with craftspeople shown in solitary work, working with their hands. The majority of these photographs fell into the "craftsmanship and tradition" theme identified above and showed the craftsperson at work, the craftsperson's tools and the craftsperson with the product.
