ABSTRACT

Suffering has been the reality of humanity, Africans and Christians included. The causes of suffering in Africa are multidimensional. So are the solutions. The spiritual footstool is just one among many other solutions and therefore we must cultivate holistic interdisciplinary ways of looking for solutions. Theologians must build partnerships with other professionals in our search for solutions. Liberian crosses and George Togba's vision tell me that it is therefore important to focus on individuals and local communities who work to stop the suffering and even prevent more crosses from being erected. Theologians stand to gain if we pay more attention to the lived experience of those individuals and communities who have made significant difference in ending suffering and restoring dignity in seemingly hopeless situations. As indicated earlier, causes of suffering in Africa are multidimensional and the context has become very complex with the onslaught of the HIV and AIDS pandemic.
