ABSTRACT

Theology is in principle the relating of everything to God, it is not surprising that the establishing of this evolutionary perspective has been perceived as a challenge - and even as a threat - to received Christian beliefs about God, nature, and humanity. Natural selection was eventually fully vindicated by the later discovery of the laws of heredity and by developments in the twentieth century. Sociobiology is the systematic study of the biological, especially genetic, basis of patterns of social behaviour in socially organized species. Charles Darwin's proposition is that species are derived from one another by natural selection of the best procreators. Life is emergent from the physico-chemical, the psychological from the neurological, and personhood from the human brain in the human body: all are levels of reality. What is also true is that humanity manifests aspirations to a perfection not yet attained, a potentiality not yet actualized, but no original righteousness.
