ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the some case studies selected for the preliminary analysis. It adopts a presentation, which is similar for the treatment of each element. The chapter summarizes the basic significance of each case as it is discussed in the framework of the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA). It tries to establish the degree of convergence among the three North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) countries in relation with each case study. The chapter provides a provisional assessment regarding the influence of the NAFTA factor in relation to the degree of convergence arrived at. Based on its recent experience in negotiating treaties with southern, less developed, countries, the authors say that Mexico was advocating the 'negative list' NAFTA model of liberalization for trade in services. Agriculture was an Agriculturemic sector different from the others and national governments had the right to protect their population against food dependance.
