Before laying the track, it should be verified that the subgrade has been properly treated (see chapter 9) and that the transverse slope (3+5%) is correctly given.

Ballast is transported with special wagons and is put in situ. The ballast bed should be properly leveled, graded and in particular consolidated. A gantry or a light type vehicle is used to pull a scarifier for the usual scarifYing of the top ballast and also to grade the top ballast with a small grading machine and to consolidate the ballast bed with a vibmting plate or roller vibmtor.
