ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book is organised to serve as a potential text for guiding thought towards a holistic approach to privatisation by providing in terms of development and privatisation narrative insight garnered at the policy-making, implementation and grassroots levels. It examines the theoretical underpinnings of privatisation in the developed countries on the one hand and the inherent constraints to its universal application on the other. The book develops that effectiveness is evaluated in terms of freedom. It explains privatisation from the perspective of economic orthodoxy: Outcomes and analyses drawn from selected reports and other published works are synthesized and presented. The book describes the techniques of privatisation in context of the underlying goals of the process pursuant to the Washington Consensus. It highlights the nuances of the privatisation experience of Eastern European Countries-3 and Russia. The book examines the privatisation of the Guyana Electricity Corporation.
