ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the processes of emerging new economic spaces in the global society in the digital era. In general, local embeddedness of economic action has been emphasized the empirical studies such as industrial districts and industrial clustering. The chapter introduces two contrasting region in Korea: one is most developed and innovative place, Kangnam in Seoul; the other is most underdeveloped region in Korea, Sunchang-gun in Jeonbuk province. Sunchang is located in a mountainous and peripheral area in southwestern Korea. Its population has continuously decreased since 1970s. Sunchang County also established a research lab in the complex to support quality control of the traditional Gochoojang. Gochoojang, thick soypaste mixed with red pepper, has been famous products of Sunchang because of its distinct taste with fermentation process. Most of the houses have made their own Gochoojang.
