ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to classify environmental hazards in Enugu Urban into two primary groups namely waste hazards, and incorporeal hazards. It analyses wastes generated from waste hazards as market places, residential houses, and construction and demolition projects. Construction and demolition projects are regular occurrences in Enugu city and generate large volume of solid wastes. There are many waste disposal methods adopted in different cities around the world and these include salvage, sanitary landfill, incineration, burning, resource recovery, and open dumping. Frequent removal of wastes from urban dump sites should be intensified. More public awareness should be created with regards to noise pollution and open welding activities. Government should hasten action on the movement of the mechanics to their permanent sites to contain their hazardous effects from their activities. Derelict vehicles should be removed from road as they constitute nuisance and hazards to both pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
