ABSTRACT

The effects of hazards in settled areas are of three dimensions - the effect on the people, the effect on the land and the effect on the economy. Most hazards come from exposure to harmful situations in environment and hazards could be grouped into two types: human-induced hazards, and natural hazards. The impact of natural hazards in settled areas could result in loss of lives and property as well as mass displacement of people, epidemics of diseases, hunger and starvation. Monitoring of natural hazards has become the pre-occupation of many countries. Relief shelters could be located near a hazardous area depending on the extent of the disaster. The problems of displaced victims of natural hazards include incidence of sickness and diseases. The rehabilitation team will strive to recreate settlements similar to those of the displaced persons, whenever it becomes impossible for the victims to go back to their former homes.
