ABSTRACT

This chapter offers some possible solutions by indicating the roles to be played by both government and citizens alike towards controlling, and if possible eliminating, the dehumanizing menace of erosion in all its ramifications. In this context, erosion can be said to mean a dynamic process which involves the wearing away of the earth's surface by such natural agents as running water, ice, wave-action, wind and corrosive action as well as the movement of the rock debris that results. Concern about the adverse impacts of erosion on environment, has drawn the attention of institutions, communities and individuals. To arrest the increasing rate of erosion menace, the government should intensify efforts towards generating new consciousness towards protecting the environment by means of anti-erosion programmes which will focus on environmental education/awareness training. To achieve effective erosion control, it is imperative that institutional and legislative frameworks be established.
