ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies the causes of flooding and its magnitude in Awka, so as to provide vital information input in urban environmental planning and development as well as rehabilitation. The major assumption is that the first step to the formulation of effective survival measures lies in having adequate knowledge of the hazard. Awka is characterised by a few paved surfaces and a virtual absence of storm drainage channels. The study has revealed that the factors are good determinants of the magnitude and generation of storm water flooding in Awka. The multiple regressions have sustained systems thinking in terms of the multiplicity of factors responsible for flood yield. For purposes of urban planning, the policy implication is that for a successful assault on flooding and its menace, the causes of flooding must be identified so that future physical planning efforts or urban rehabilitation must recognise the factors.
