ABSTRACT

Everything connected with the hallucinogenic drugs has aroused intense controversy. Nowhere are the problems of classifying drugs more obvious than in this chapter. Most drugs meet the defining requirements for membership of more than one class of drugs, and some fail to fit comfortably into any major class. There is not even agreement about what these drugs should be called. At different times they have been classified as psychedelics, psychotomimetics, psychodysleptics and hallucinogens.
