ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that the study of labour unionism in the sector is not a study of processes and outcomes that were inconsequential or on the margins. It seeks to bring all the conclusions from the previous chapters together to form a coherent endpoint and in so doing provide more than just the customary summary and restatement. The chapter considers thesis and its themes; workplace unionism, turning points, forms and models of labour unionism, militancy and moderation, political complexions and so on. It presents a central line of inquiry which has revolved around the combination of the absence and underdevelopment of workplace unionism within the original independent labour unionism and the subsequently reformed dependent labour unionism in the financial services sector. One of the key aspects of the investigation of developing unionateness in response to changing environmental conditions has been the inquiry into the presence or absence of militancy amongst the financial services sector workers.
