ABSTRACT

The global fight against malaria and tuberculosis, as the fight against HIV/AIDS, has enlisted international organizations, governments, NGOs, private sector enterprises and foundations. Malaria, together with HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis, is one of the major public health challenges undermining development in the poorest countries in the world. Malaria is a life-theatening parasitic disease transmitted by mosquitos. The Malaria Vaccine Initiative at PATH was created in 1999 through a $50 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. At the same time, encourage laboratories to initiate or develop research on vaccine and drugs, apply pressure on pharmaceutical companies to reduce their prices for developing countries. The Alliance, created in 2000, is a not-for-profit public-private partnership aimed at accelerating the discovery and development of faster-acting and affordable drugs to fight TB. The international organizations benefit from the alliances by extending the scope of their programmes, obtaining additional resources, benefiting from NGOs pressures on price reduction and access to medicines.
