ABSTRACT

The 1981 Council of Europe Convention regarding the protection of individuals from the automated processing of personal data was the first international legal text binding Greece. The Introductory Report of Law 2472/1997 on the Protection of Individuals with regard to the Processing of Personal Data, addressed to the Greek Parliament, acknowledges the rapidity of social and technological developments and emphasizes that information as well as digital technology have led to fundamental changes of classical methods and policies of communication. The Directive (Article l(a)) aims to protect fundamental rights and freedoms, in particular privacy. According to Greek Law, it is necessary for the data subject to give his or her consent for the purpose of the processing, the nature of the data, and the recipient(s) as well as the name, the title and the address of the controller or the controller's representative. According to Article 5 of Law 2472/97, the conditions for legitimate processing are treated as partially lexically ordered.
