ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses some of the questions from the perspective of tribal women in West Bengal. It describes three food calendars made by rural women in 1993, 1995 and in 1998, referred to earlier and have analysed the same to get an idea of what the women have to say on food security in Krishna Rakshit Chak. The Food Calendar shows two food systems: primary food system and secondary food system. Both systems of food play critical roles in providing food to the villagers of Krishna Rakshit Chak. The importance of the two kinds of food lies not only in the nutritional aspects of food consumed but also in the time when such food is available and the variety and palate that they add to the villagers' diet. The chapter discusses the role of common property resources (CPRs) in food security. It analyses the food insecurity situation in terms of the Entitlement and Deprivation (ED) Thesis.
