ABSTRACT

Uncha Gaon is situated approximately 4.3 kms south east of Faridabad old industrial area and 1.34 from Ballabgarh industrial area. Farmers in Uncha Gaon grow primary commodities, mostly vegetables, for sale. These commodities may be eaten, used in preparing drinks, turned into paper or clothes or used as drugs. Agriculture remains at the heart of the livelihood system in Uncha Gaon, though a fairly large section of the population has more than one source of livelihood. There are two kinds of crops grown in Uncha Gaon: food crops and cash crops. Jowar and wheat are the principal food crops grown. Uncha Gaon's food security is jeopardised because the farmers have migrated from endowment based entitlement to food in favour of exchange based entitlement. Because farmers of Uncha Gaon have migrated from agriculture for sustenance and subsistence and from food self-sufficiency to income self-sufficiency, hunger stalks the villagers whenever income dips.
