ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the Ulsan automobile cluster using a multi-dimensional spatial framework. It explores the historical background and challenges of the Ulsan automobile cluster and the cluster will be analysed using the proposed multi-dimensional spatial framework. The chapter describes the characteristics of each spatial dimension of the framework and explains in qualitative terms and measured through a quantitative analysis of its spatial networks. It discusses the possible path of the cluster's development and its policy implications in terms of the case study of Sejong, one of the large first tier vendors of the Hyundai Motor Company in Ulsan. The extensive body of research on global production networks (GPNs) has expanded our understanding of the spatial dynamics of industries and enterprises, especially in the era of globalisation. The characteristics of the innovation activities of the Ulsan automobile cluster have been dominated by Korea's national regimes and institutions.
