ABSTRACT

This chapter shows that nations across the world have been actively trying to combat smoking through various policy measures and the effectiveness of these measures has been the subject of active economics research. It indicates that overall smuggling activity is indirectly related to a country's stage of development. The chapter focuses on the impact of advertising and advertising bans on cigarette consumption. It examines Health warnings, including mandated labels on cigarette packaging and the distribution of other health education materials. The chapter discusses the economics of smoking cessation and also discusses Comprehensive tobacco control policies, both in the US and internationally. It also examines the effectiveness of smoking control initiatives around the world. The chapter explores the price or tax tobacco control initiatives appear to be an effective strategy to reduce smoking, especially for the youth.
