ABSTRACT

There is a significant amount of work that looks at churchmanship in the Anglican Church from a historical, anecdotal or sociological viewpoint, but nothing that asks the clergy directly about their understanding of their own churchmanship and the difference that it makes to their lives. The new churchmanship measure asked how each curate assessed his or her own churchmanship at the beginning of ordination training. There were questions about diocesan post-ordination training, about Bible versions used by the curate, and about whether the curate had been ordained priest yet, and, if so, what meaning priesthood had for him or her. The questionnaire 'Curates, Courses and Colleges: the first year' was sent out in 1994. Within the total list curates came from each of the residential theological colleges in England and Wales, and from each of the non-residential theological courses with the one exception of the St Alban's Diocese Ministerial Training Scheme.
