ABSTRACT

Geographically, the region of Eindhoven is situated at some 100 km east of the Randstad, the cultural and economic 'gravity centre' of The Netherlands. This chapter explores the knowledge economy strategies of Eindhoven. It analyses the foundations of the knowledge economy for Eindhoven. They include the knowledge base, the economic base, the quality of life, the accessibility, the urban diversity, the urban scale, and the social equity in the city. The chapter discusses Eindhoven's knowledge economy activities. It explains how well the city (and the actors in it) manages to: attract and retain talented people; create new knowledge; apply new knowledge and make new combinations; and develop new growth clusters. Moreover, by extending regional networks, Eindhoven hopes to enlarge the critical size of the region to make it more attractive for international companies and for locating metropolitan amenities and knowledge facilities. The chapter contains conclusions and unfolds perspectives for Eindhoven's position in the emerging knowledge economy.
