ABSTRACT

This chapter describes and analyses Manchester's e-governance strategies. It also describes the challenges that the city of Manchester faces. The chapter summarizes the city's information and communications technologies (ICT) strategy. It focuses on one of the most remarkable initiatives in Manchester: the introduction of the wireless broadband wide area network in East Manchester. The chapter discusses Manchester's e-vision as laid out in the official Council Statement on e-government. It also analyses in more detail how the City of Manchester seeks to put electronic services online and the way it deals with the internal organizational consequences. The chapter also discusses the Manchester's presence on the Internet. The city of Manchester's aim to have all its service delivery online by 2005, in line with government targets for all public bodies in the UK. In the deprived area of East Manchester, a large regeneration programme is being implemented in which ICT is being incorporated as a tool to achieve things.
