ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses Venice's e-governance strategies. It describes enormous challenges that the city of Venice faces. The chapter summarizes the city's information technologies strategy. It also analyses the issues of content, access and infrastructure respectively. The chapter also describes how the city can meet the challenges by developing an e-governance strategy, and the role of stakeholders involved in the process. It evaluates the potential the offer to a more sustainable Venice and the level of achievement, analysing the weaknesses and potential points of improvement. The chapter focuses on the city's e-strategy. Venice is the capital city and administrative centre of the Veneto Region, in the heart of the Italian northeast, a macro-area that represents a strong economic subsystem with peculiar characteristics. Venice was expecting an estimated additional flow of 3 million visitors motivated by the event, hence the opportunity to divert the flow to peripheral but well-equipped destinations with some cultural or religious attractiveness.
