ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors examine recommendations of highest priority developed from the activities. They summarize recommendations that derive from their study, hopefully to assist policy- and decision-makers towards taking useful advanced action. The authors deal with the explicit challenge of climate change and also with the implicit issues of how Bulgaria prepares itself for climate change impacts, in both scholarly and institutional dimensions. They suggest that climate change is also relevant for the more immediate threat of recurring drought. Many recommendations focus on increasing public awareness of environmental issues in general and climate change in specific. The strategic task ahead for the forests in the low-lying parts of the country includes adaptation of forests towards a drier climate. The impacts of drought and climate change on agriculture are among the best-understood areas of analysis in Bulgaria, although existing studies have focused on grain crops, leaving open questions about possible climate change impacts on viticulture, fruits, and vegetable production.
