ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to carry forward and consolidate the arguments for policy interventions. The establishment of new local delivery facilities has been successful in Argyll and Ayrshire in broadening access to Vocational Education and Training, suggesting more investment in further education in rural and deprived communities should be encouraged. The chapter considers the broad policy implications arising for each of the substantive cross-cutting policy areas – economic development, education and training, transport and communications, urban regeneration, and community planning. As with most other policy areas, there are tensions between different jurisdictional levels over the delivery of sustainable economic development. There is a need for encouragement for innovation and development in the tourism sector, and for area tourist boards to be incorporated more directly into economic development strategies and fora. The chapter also presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book.
