ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book demonstrates the emergent global characteristics of a right to autonomy via the proposals for international right to autonomy in UN. It analyzes the contribution of Marxist internationalism to contemporary multicultural debates on the rights of minorities. The book analyzes the implications of European integration for advancing autonomy as a legal right and global mechanism of conflict resolution. It examines two central issues regarding the Kosovo region: whether Kosovo can be integrated into a federal constitutional state of Serbia and Montenegro; and whether such an arrangement can be developed within EU law and an EU constitution. The book also analyzes the historical and the tensions between the radical politics of the Kurdish movement in the Southeast region of Turkey and state-sponsored liberalization.
