ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to indicate the breadth of Charles Knight commitment to Education. He was himself what is called a 'lifelong learner'. He had a restless, pioneering spirit that was constantly moving on to a new interest or printing endeavour. Knight's educational work pervaded his whole life and far exceeded his role as publisher of popular literature for the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. Knight's own education, flawed though it was in some respects, gave him unique insights, which enabled him to move at ease among many different professions and trades, in all sections of the community, both as a participant in the affairs of the day and as a commentator/observer. Knight heartily approved of a broader curriculum for middle- and upper-class schools, one which would encompass modern subjects of some practical use to the students.
