ABSTRACT

In 1975 the first Dutch edition of my textbook on philosophical analysis for theologians appeared. 1 This completed my project to introduce theology students to the basic concepts of semantics, theory of values, epistemology and ontology and the way in which these are applied in religion. I now had a textbook on these issues that the students could study by themselves and I could turn my attention in teaching and research to other matters. This had by then become necessary because the theology students were becoming restless about all the philosophy that they felt I was forcing down their throats! After all, they had come to university to study theology and not philosophy and they demanded that I should now devote my teaching to issues that were more directly theological.
