ABSTRACT

Legal information professionals can work in many different areas of the law and in any number of different roles within those areas or organizations, which makes for an interesting and varied profession. These may include academic law librarians, information officers in a law firm, librarians in a court service or government department, knowledge managers or document and record managers. The principal users of an academic law library are the staff and students of the law school. This chapter provides information about working as a freelance legal information specialist, drawing on the author's experience in commercial law firms in London. It covers points to consider when setting up as a freelancer; advantages and disadvantages, how to find work and what types of work to expect. Firms use different sources of information and it can be useful to compare particular services in a variety of working situations.
