ABSTRACT

This chapter considers what people have written in the questionnaire and what the interviewees have said. It refers to responses in Common Worship Eucharistic Prayers Survey (CWEPS) which reveal respondents' views on the nature of worship. Together with the thirty-five utterances which were coded Otherness, Atmosphere, Majestic God, or Mystery, this evidence suggests that there is widespread agreement that worship 'heightens awareness of a dimension of experience which is different from the ordinary concerns of the everyday world'. Both CWEPS and Collects Survey (COLL) have some bearing on the contrast between the traditional and contemporary in the language of worship, and some illustrative comments from these sources will be included in the analysis. Some responders have likened the experience of worship to going 'home', by which they mean going home 'to heaven' or experiencing a heightened awareness of the 'Kingdom of God'.
