ABSTRACT

The demographic trends have important implications for those involved with the people management requirements of any business or organization. The fact is that the demographic trend has changed dramatically as a result of effective contraception, economic stability, social change and healthcare. Organizations will also need to be proactive about ensuring that their staff has the right skills and knowledge to meet the needs of their business. Technological advances have meant that companies can look beyond their local pool of talent to workforces across the globe. Impoverished pensioners and inadequate numbers of young in the workforce are likely to have a negative impact on business as there will be less disposable income to spend on goods and services. The solution for business and the economy lies in developing policies to entice workers to defer their retirement at rates similar to OECD top performers such as US, Canada and Australia.
