ABSTRACT

The experience of aesthetic value is part of every kind of environment, even though this value may not always be dominant and may not always be positive. An environmental context in which water is the central component has a powerful sensory impact. Experiencing the world from the water provides an unusual perspective and one that varies with the particular kind of water environment we participate in. For water setting can influence how we understand ourselves and our place in the world. This chapter describes several different experiences on the water. After considering these environmental experiences, the chapter offers some general observations about the world that we come to know from the water. It considers what this aqueous perspective can contribute to environmental education. Living in a water world provides an invaluable lesson in forethought and resourcefulness. Water environments lead us to respect natural processes.
