ABSTRACT

Every mental health condition is different and every mental health condition affects different students in different ways. This chapter focuses on suicide, anger, and self-harm as areas of exploration, there are many other complex mental health conditions, each of which affects different individuals in different ways. In 2016, 90% of suicide victims had a diagnosed mental health condition. According to Mental Health Foundation, anxiety and depression are the most common of these mental health conditions in the UK, with almost 8% of people meeting the criteria for diagnosis. High male suicide rates might be best summarised by this thesis statement: Males are more likely to kill themselves than females because they do not talk about their feelings. One explanation for high male suicide rates is the fact that men are simply less likely than women to seek help for mental health problems. One factor in male suicide, alongside emotional mutism and a reluctance to seek medical help, is men’s anger.
