ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the areas of concern that schools and teachers can most easily address in their efforts to destroy the foundations of a rape culture that has been building for centuries. It discusses pornography, its impact on boys, and the ways in which schools could harness pornography for good. The chapter considers the approaches school leaders and classroom teachers can take to deal with the very real problem of normalised sexual language and sexist behaviour in schools. Rape culture is perpetuated through the use of misogynistic language, the objectification of women’s bodies, and the glamorisation of sexual violence, thereby creating a society that disregards women’s rights and safety. Heterosexuality is a vital component of the hegemonic masculinity many boys have been pushed towards, consciously or unconsciously, from birth. One of the major concerns about exposure to pornography is that it encourages boys to be sexually violent.
